Stadt und Land, oder: Der Viehhändler aus Ober-Oesterreich : Posse mit Gesang in zwei Akten, 1845, ca. 1873-1895.

Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Wien: Verlag von A. Pichler's sel. Witwe, 1845; "Als Manuscript gedruckt" "Das Buch und die Partitur sind für alle deutschen Bühnen Eigenthum des Theatergeschäftsbureaus des Adalbert Prix in Wien"), and 12 handwritten role books. Music is presumably by Adolf Müller. Handwritten musical scores are included for bass, clarinet, flute, and trombone; and score for piano and vocalist in a printed program (Das Lied vom Herzen ... gesungen von Franz Wallner) (see Folder 672). The published copy of the play has been annotated as a prompt-book. The following 10 parts are represented by the role books: Herr von Hochfeld; Eulalia, seine Frau; Clothilde, seine Tochter (2 versions); Sebastian Hochfeld; Regina, seine Tochter (2 versions); Herr von Wellenschlag, Banquier; Robert von Wellschlag; Herr von Hupfer; Haller, Cassier; and Faustin, Diener. (Three roles seem to be missing, as the play was performed: Apollonia, Hochfelds Frau; Herr von Glatt, Börse-Sensal; and ein Kapellmeister. The published copy shows two further roles: Graf von Flambourg; and Jacob, Bedienter.) The published copy and a folder for the music are marked as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from at least the early 1870s to the mid 1890s, first as an actor, and later as a prompter and proprietor of a theater lending library. The title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library (dated 1886; see box 34). The role books are well used, with the names of actors and actresses noted on the covers reflecting as many as 6 or more casts over time. The names of cast members indicate performances in Philadelphia extending from around 1873 to at least the late 1880s. Seven of the role books are stamped "M. Dardenne," reflecting that they originally belonged to Marie Dardenne, an actress who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from the late 1870s through the 1880s. The role book for Sebastian is signed and dated "Varena 5-10 Mai 1874," by the actor Alexander Varena, who evidently played the role at that time (he was active in Philadelphia mainly in the mid to late 1870s). One of the role books for Clothilde is stamped "Deutsches Theater / Adolph Bender, Direktor" (the location of that theater could not be identified) and signed at the back "Bender," by the person who wrote it out, which might have been Anna Bender, one of the actresses who played the role. See the index in the collection's register for details about 6 related theater newspapers (drawer 35) and two playbills (folders 678 and 680).
